Why GLP-1 therapy works

GLP-1 receptor agonists are not diet pills. They work with your body's natural metabolic pathways — developed through decades of diabetes and cardiovascular research.

  • Appetite regulation
Signals the brain to reduce hunger and increase satiety
  • Blood sugar control
Stimulates insulin secretion and reduces glucagon — crucial for T2DM patients
  • Cardiovascular benefit
SELECT trial: 20% reduction in major cardiac events in non-diabetic obese patients
  • Kidney protection
Emerging evidence of renoprotective effects — safe in CKD stages 1–4 with monitoring
Mechanism of action
Hypothalamus signalling
GLP-1 activates satiety centres, reducing caloric intake by 20–30%
Gastric emptying delay
Slows nutrient absorption, blunting post-meal glucose spikes
Pancreatic insulin release
Glucose-dependent insulin stimulation with minimal hypoglycaemia risk
Available agents
Semaglutide (Ozempic / Wegovy) Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) Liraglutide (Saxenda)

Check your eligibility now

Our clinical screener evaluates 18 criteria across BMI, comorbidities, contraindications, renal function, and medications — in under 2 minutes.

Key eligibility criteria
BMI ≥30 kg/m² (any patient)
BMI ≥27 kg/m² + weight-related comorbidity
Age ≥18 years
No personal/family history of MTC or MEN2
Not pregnant or breastfeeding
No active pancreatitis
Nephrology note
This screener includes eGFR-based renal assessment. GLP-1 agents are generally safe in CKD stages 1–4 but require specialist oversight at eGFR <30, particularly to monitor for volume-related AKI from GI side effects.

Absolute contraindications
Relative cautions
Step 4 of 5 — Kidney & medications
Renal function & current medications
GLP-1s are renally safe in most CKD stages, but GI-related volume loss may precipitate AKI.
eGFR <15: Nephrology specialist input required before initiating GLP-1 therapy.
eGFR 15–30: Proceed with caution. Monitor closely for dehydration and AKI risk.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about GLP-1 therapy in the UAE.

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss in the UAE?
Ozempic (semaglutide) is MOHAP-registered for Type 2 diabetes. Use for obesity management is considered off-label and must be prescribed by a qualified specialist based on clinical indication.
Can I get GLP-1 medication delivered at home in UAE?
Yes — licensed UAE pharmacies are permitted to deliver prescription medications to your home. A valid e-prescription from a MOHAP-licensed physician is required.
Is GLP-1 therapy safe if I have kidney disease?
GLP-1 receptor agonists do not require dose adjustment in CKD stages 1–4 and emerging data suggest renoprotective effects. Caution is warranted in CKD stage 5 or dialysis patients.
What does this eligibility screener actually check?
The screener evaluates: BMI threshold (≥30 or ≥27 + comorbidity), 8 qualifying comorbidities, 6 absolute contraindications, 6 relative cautions, eGFR-based renal assessment, and 5 major drug interactions.
Are compounded GLP-1 medications available in UAE?
No. Unlike the US, the UAE has no compounding pharmacy ecosystem for GLP-1 agents. All medications must be brand-name products sourced from licensed pharmaceutical distributors.
How is patient data stored?
In compliance with UAE Federal Law No. 2 of 2019, all patient health data is stored on UAE-based servers only. Our platform is ISO 27001 certified.
